Observations:

 

July 2014 – After floating around the roster with limited production for the past three years, the Leafs declined to retain his NHL rights. It would not be surprising to see him stick with the organization as an AHL signee to continue as a utility man for the Marlies, but he is unlikely to get NHL offers anywhere until he shows a drastic leap forward in being able to contribute regularly. April 2014 – After struggling to become a regular early in the season, it’s a struggle not to include Ryan in the lineup as of late. His hard work when he did grace the lineup has now led to increased minutes and responsibility with coach Steve Spott. The production is still minimal for a forward so far accumulating a mere 15 points in 47 games thus far, but as of late he is showing large signs of a possible breakout of sorts. In his last 20 games, he has only been held off the shot chart twice while accumulating 35 attempts on net and six points. What doesn’t appear in stat charts is his work ethic and excitement creation level while involved in play. He is poised for a small promotion next year as a regular with top-9 responsibilities alongside more creative players than Brad Staubitz and Jerred Smithson while being a solid shorthanded option. He is well off a fantasy manager’s radar for good reason and is unlikely to be an option at any point, but he may slip into the NHL in a fun-to-watch, utility role at some point. Jason Banks

 

December 2012 – Has struggled to stay consistently in the lineup, but that was expected and could find himself being demoted for ice time soon. When Ryan has donned the blue and white jersey, he has been very involved and productive. Currently he has three goals and an assist in a handful of games. With a bigger role, he could be a wildcard to have a very bright future. Jason Banks

 

April 2012 – Ryan took the development of his game to USA Hockey’s USNTDP and then followed it up with two seasons in the OHL. He plays primarily in a defensive forward role with his team either at center or wing. The versatility he brings makes him an asset along with his hard-nosed approach, although his offensive production is limited. This is his first season at the pro level and has seen action with the Marlies (AHL) and now with the Reading Royals (ECHL). Russ Bitely
