Fantasy Summary

Posesses some offensive tools but is seen more as a two-way D who’s good enough defensively to carry 1st PK role.

April 2018 – The big Swede is still signed with Frolunda HC for the 2018-2019 campaign but it wouldn’t be surprising to see him in North America next season. It’s time for him to develop his game on the smaller ice. It was a quiet season for him in Sweden except from the fact that he became an assistant captain. He managed to score only 2 goals after scoring 7 without any powerplay the previous season. He’s a good two-way defender but his mind is more focused on the defensive side of the game. At this point, he seems more like a depth defender then someone with fantasy value. He takes pride in his defensive fiability and Stars scouts see him as a shutdown guy with 1st PK responsability. September 2017 – The Stars signed Nyberg to a three-year, entry-level contract during the offseason, from the Swedish Hockey League. He will be assigned to the AHL to begin his North American professional career, providing nice depth for the Stars. Nyberg was one of the better offensive producers last year in the SHL, and has the necessary size to succeed in the NHL. Don’t expect him to suit up in the NHL for a few seasons (he turned 21 years old in July), but he possesses an aggressive offensive nature that may draw the eye of the NHL after he establishes himself in the AHL.  Matt Kowalski

September 2015 – Dallas went very defenseman heavy in the 2014 NHL draft. Case in point: John Nyberg. He was the fifth of six defensemen selected by Dallas on day two. At the time he was drafted, Stars amateur scout Rickard Oquist had this to say “He’s a two-way defenseman. He has some offensive tools, can move the puck, good first pass and has a bomb for a shot. He’s pretty good on the power play and has put up decent points in the Under-18 league this year. Really excited about him.”

Nyberg was a well travelled man last season playing for four teams across three different leagues. Nyberg spent about half the season with the Frolunda J20 program playing 25 games and amassing seven goals and 10 assists in the regular season and added one goal and one assist in eight playoff games. As a result of his strong play he also spent to the big club in the SHL, playing 17 games and putting up one assist. He had limited success while dressing mostly as the seventh defenseman, averaging just under eight minutes per game. Lastly he played 13 games on loan split between Mora IK and IK Oskarshamn in the Allsvenskan posting one assist. Like I said, well travelled. Nyberg will begin the season again on loan to Oskarshamn in the Allsvenskan in an effort to give him a healthy amount of playing time. He has the size needed for an NHL defenseman but will need to add a bit of mass and strength. – Brad Phillips
