Fantasy Summary

Modest hit/block/PIM upside, but buried behind many better offensive options

April 2018 – Several injuries to the Avs defense gave Duncan Siemens yet another golden opportunity to prove his NHL-worthiness. In 5 playoff contests against Nashville he actually passed the eye test and seemed comfortable on the PK, but in reality he was averaging only 8 minutes TOI per game, had zero SOG and was a minus player. This was a promising stint but dont expect him to build fantasy value come fall. Hayden Soboleski November 2017 – Siemens had his best ever chance to make the team at the start of this season, but failed to do so once again despite little competition. With the amount of d-men the organization have added over the last year, there is no chance of Siemens overcoming his internal competition. Career AHLer. Hayden Soboleski April 2017 – After becoming a rock on the back end in San Antonio over four years of ripening, Siemens is finally getting an NHL shot as the season winds down. He only has one NHL game played under belt, and its unlikely that he sticks at this point in his development process, but if he does he could be a worthwhile contributor in hits, blocks, and PIMs. No offensive upside, and seems to be a reliable AHL shut-down d-man. Hayden Soboleski October 2016 – Siemens impressed in Avs’ training camp and pre-season, and seems to have found new life now he has committed to being a pure defensive defenceman. He has been assigned to the AHL for the 2016-17 season, but will be considered when injuries arise on the blueline. Dont expect this new trust to translate to any fantasy value outside of hits, blocks, and PIMs in the unlikely event that he spends serious time in the NHL. Hayden Soboleski June 2016 – Despite an underwhelming season, Colorado GM Joe Sakic has stated that Siemens will receive a qualifying offer from the club to play next season. The Avs clearly value his defensive zone behavior (shut down capabilities with a mean streak), as his offensive shortcomings make him fantasy irrelevant. In addition to this, he remains low on the depth chart and is unlikely to receive NHL action. Hayden Soboleski December 2015 – Siemens has spent the 2015-16 season as a second-pairing defenceman for the Rampage, where he has two points but 42 PIM in 20 games. His offensive upside has disappeared, so his (very) limited fantasy value is better observed through his PIM and physical nature. He is unlikely to be called-up to the Avs before options such as Gorley or Zadorov are given a better chance, and will have even more competition in the future with the development of Bigras and Geertsen. Siemens should not be on your fantasy radar. Hayden Soboleski May 2015 – The 2014-15 season in Lake Erie led to a disappointing six points (six assists) in 54 games for Siemens. He suffered two injuries during the year which limited his playing time, but earned a call-up for the Avalanche’s final regular season game. His offensive upside appears to be fading, however his gritty defensive game continues to slowly develop responsibility and consistency. Hayden Soboleski October 2014- Siemens was relegated back to duty with the Lake Erie monsters even thoughhe drew praise from coach Patrick Roy which is promising news for the young rearguard. It’s definitely a positive sign in his development and his stock should be trending upward. During the preseason games and training camp, Siemens brought a no-nonsense physicality to the blue line for the Avalanche. Although limited offensively, he could be a solid call up for his defensive ability if the injury bug hits the Avalanche blue line. Aron Arenas February 2014 – Duncan Siemens scored his first professional goal VS. Grand Rapids on February 5th. Siemens has struggled to develop as quickly as Colorado had hoped but the promise and potential are there for Siemens to be a true stay at home defensemen. Andrew Ward June 2013 – Duncan Siemens finished out 2013 with 32 points in 70 games and a very respectable plus-31. Siemens continues to develop in the WHL and as a prospect Siemens has a promising future. His play is been mean and gritty, and his defensive ability is exactly what the Avalanche are missing on the back end. With the Avalanche in a transitional period of sorts, Siemens might get his best shot yet in the next training camp. Andrew Ward April 2012 – Siemens didn’t see the statistical dominance that some expected after his draft year. Siemens is defense first player that is one of the hardest players to get by in one-on-one situations. He moves the puck very well. In the 2011-12 season he put up 28 points in 57 games. It was an alarming drop from the 43 points he had in his draft year. Siemens will challenge for a roster spot on the Avs next year, but if he can’t crack their top six, he will dominate Major Junior and be a big part of Team Canada at the U20’s and the Saskatoon Blades as they host the Memorial Cup. Zenon Herasymiuk December 2011 – After looking- and playing- like a spot in the NHL was likely right away, 2011 first round selection Duncan Siemens has not enjoyed the dominant campaign many expected of a player who posted 43 points, a +40 rating and 121 PIM in his draft year. Held to 16 points before the break, Siemens also failed to crack Team Canada. A long, luxurious skater who can ragdoll opponents in his own end, that Siemens’ offensive game has seemingly disappeared with the departure of Stefan Elliot is a sign his abilities in that department may have been overstated.
