Observations:

 

April 2014 – Nilstorp’s career is very much in question at the moment due to circumstances out of his control. He is exiting the season an unrestricted free agent who has been the main load carrier on the best team in the AHL but his workload is somewhat artificial. He has been outplayed by organizational ‘Gem’ Jack Campbell, but he has played as the starter due to Campbell missing two and a half months with an injury and lack of organizational options. While his numbers and play has been strong, he is not posting a .949 SV% with 4 shutouts in 15 starts like Jack Campbell, instead he only… has a .917 SV% and a trio of blankings in 44 appearances. Nilstorp is proving to be amongst the top goaltenders in the AHL, but his job may come down to where the Stars feel they are with Jack Campbell and who they could bring in. Many rumors have floated around that the Stars may want to resign Tim Thomas and have Campbell play another AHL season, or even have Jack Campbell make the jump, I don’t feel a 30-yr-old Nilstorp would want to stick around the organization longer without assurances on opportunity. That said he should have NHL suitors ready to have him as a backup or close (expensive) 3^rd string option, otherwise he could be on his way back to being a star in Europe. Jason Banks

 

May 2013 – Nilstorp teamed with Jack Campbell to backstop the Texas Stars to the top-seed in the AHL’s Western Conference. Nilstorp played in 39 games posting a record of 19-13-3, with a GAA of 2.38 and save percentage of .907. He was named the starter for the Calder Cup playoffs and responded with a dominate first round performance, posting a GAA of 0.96, an .963 save percentage, with a shutout. Rex Doty

 

February 2013 – Nilstorp is a 29-year-old import who has jumped on the scene with Dallas through their excellent overseas scouting program. He is tall, quick and very polished as a goaltender but his frame does not have much mass. He is a rock in the net, very dependable and has good shutdown ability. In the AHL,he has shown a seamless transition to North America with a 2.21 GAA and .913 SV% with four shutouts. He has also shown dominance in the shootout allowing only a pair of goals on 19 attempts for a .895 shootout save percentage (.750 is considered strong). Nilstorp gained an advantage early over Richard Bachman by playing through the lockout and actually won the backup job out of training camp, but due to an unfortunate groin strain, Bachman was able to regain the job and Nilstorp is back in Austin, Texas until the next opportunity arises. He has an ‘X’ factor that is rather rare at this time, he is a southpaw. Right catching goalies are rather difficult for shooters as they are extremely rare, at any given time, only a couple play in any given league year to year, which gives shooters an awkward look at the net.
