January 2018 - Makar has won gold as a member of Team Canada at the WJC and named to the all-tournament team. He didn't receive top-pairing minutes, but he was electric every time he was on the ice and was named one of the top three players of the tournament. He looks ready to jump into the Avs lineup later this year. Hayden Soboleski

December 2017 - Makar has made Team Canada. He currently projects as a third-pairing d-man on the stacked back end, but may very well be adjusted once the tournament begins. Hayden Soboleski

December 2017 - Makar is doing a good job reminding doubters that there's more to his game than points. UMass coach Carvel has singled him out as a defenseman that has "separated himself from the rest of the group" as a top d-man who "can score, can be effective, are smart, poised, handle the puck, make good decisions and, basically, have a really positive effect in the game for us". But since points are important - he leads the team in points from the back end with 9 in 14 games, leads the team in SOG with 45, and him and his defense partner have the highest plus/minus ratings on the squad. Makar is a fantasy stud and is a near-lock to represent Canada later this month at the World Juniors. Hayden Soboleski

March 2017 – One of this year’s biggest draft ranking riser is right shot defenceman Cale Makar who plays tier II Canadian junior hockey in the AJHL. Coming from nowhere to start the season his play quietly began to command notice and he generated a lot of buzz after the World Junior A tournament where as Captain he posted four goals and eight points in four games and was a standout. Makar is arguably the most offensive defenceman in his draft class and the fastest skater of the 2017 draft group as well. He is a dynamic offensive player with speed to burn and is very competitive.  Makar has great hockey sense and reads plays well making good decisions when to join a rush. He is and undersized player and needs to add strength and learn to be effective defensively and physically despite being undersized.  Makar has committed to play College hockey next year for UMass in the NCAA where he can work on his strength and play against older and stronger competition. Fantasy Outlook: A

Dynamic offensive defenceman with speed and skill.
