Prospect Ramblings: Decade of Drafting – Sweden

Welcome to the weekend ramblings, sorry I could not get this out earlier work fun came up. This week I will look at the total players drafted out of the leagues in Sweden from 2008 to 2018. I can also add the success rate percentage here, as it is not as inflated as last weeks. I was also harsher in the grading which I feel helped quite a bit.

Before we start, here is my #GoodTweet(s) of the week:

From 2008 to 2018, 270 players were drafted out of the Swedish leagues with 25 additional players in 2019 selected. In total they have a success rate of about 45.93% overall, but their average success rate year over year is 40.80% and that I feel is much more in line as I took down the percentages in 2017 and 2018 because a lot of those players still could turn out or easily never play in the NHL.

The total players drafted out of Sweden between 2008 and 2018 are:

In 2014, 2017 and 2018 there were over 30 players drafted out of Sweden, the highest total years. 2008 had the second lowest total of 18, while 2015 was the surprising year with only 17 selections. It is surprising because it was so close to 2019 and teams had been ramping up the drafting outside of North America.

Let me add the 2019 chart in

The success rate over the years of players being drafted out of Sweden is

The most successful year for Sweden was 56.67% in 2014 from 30 players, which is quite impressive. 2013 had a success rate of 48% which made 2013 and 2014 back-to-back successful years. The other years over 40% were 2009 and 2015. Counting 2017 and 2018 would not work here as it is in line with the average but may be slightly too high or slightly too low

Players chosen per round from Swedish leagues are

Round two being so high (48) makes sense as there are plenty of talented players out of those leagues that fall to round two. Round seven at 47 also makes sense as those are the rounds GMs just pick anyone at but sometimes gems slip. It is also pretty funny to see round three and round six having the lowest totals.

Here are the added players drafted from 2019

The success rate per round slopes downwards of course, but as along with my usual rate percentages climbs then falls again

Round one is almost a 90% success rate and round two is also very good at 73%. While round three is at 48% round four craters to 26% and then picks back up in rounds five and six (over 30%) before falling to a low rate of round seven at 17%.
