Prospect Ramblings: 2019 NHL Draft Fantasy Ranking Top 10 & Matt Luff

With the recent release of the 2019 NHL Draft Fantasy Rankings, brought to you by our big dogs, I thought I’d take some time on these ramblings to bring you my top 10.

  1. Jack Hughes

Obviously the number one guy here, don’t think I need to go into details.

  1. Kappo Kakko

He elevates everyone on his line, but can also beat you on his own. Not a bad consolation prize.

  1. Peyton Krebs

Krebs is light years above his teammates in Kootenay, and it is a shame because he could be a top pick if he had more skilled teammates. When everyone does a re-draft of this class five years down the road, Krebs will be in the top three.

  1. Dylan Cozens

Part of the triple S club (size, shot, skating). He contains all of the tools to become a number one center.

  1. Vasili Podkolzin

An all-around offensive threat, he can beat you with his playmaking skills or his shot. The reason I have him at five is because of the “Russian Factor”.

  1. Trevor Zegras

It helps that he plays with Jack Hughes, but Zegras is a great skater and is very creative on the ice. He can shoot and dish the puck, a perfect complimentary player on any team’s top six.

  1. Matt Boldy

Boldy carries a heavy and accurate shot and also the vision to make plays. Can also beat you one-on-one with his size and stick-handling abilities.

  1. Alex Turcotte

Has a high hockey IQ and is very patient with the puck. He won’t wow you with a ton of plays, but he does play a hard/smart type of game.

  1. Ryan Suzuki

Pure playmaker. He finds seams your grandmother couldn’t sew through.

  1. Arthur Kaliyev

The best goal-scorer in this year’s draft, Kaliyev possesses a lethal shot that is both heavy and accurate. Could be a number one winger if he puts in time on the other side of the puck and solves his consistency issues.

Each ramblings I write I’ll bring you a prospect who has the potential for a cup of coffee along with an NHL future. If you are in a deep league, these guys have a big impact on your fantasy squad as you would be able to stream them from your minor to pro roster (if you play on a site that has farm teams) or will come cheap in DFS.

Last time I wrote about Trevor Moore and he ended up playing seven games, scoring his first NHL goal and signing a two year contract extension. This time I want to talk about Matt Luff of the LA Kings.

He has played in 30 games so far, scoring seven goals and adding three assists. Signed out of the OHL, he was on a point-per-game pace this season in the AHL before being called up. He showed some chemistry with the big boys earlier in the season when he was playing with Jeff Carter, and the reason I like him for the rest of this season is because the Kings are going to start selling off a few of their forwards (Hagelin, Thompson, possibly Toffoli), opening up lots of ice time for him. They also don’t have a ton of wing depth in their system, so if Luff can take advantage of the rest of this season, he might cement himself in a top-nine role for next season and beyond.
