Observations:
March 2018 – Charlie McAvoy has arrived. In his rookie season he has been as advertised and more. Currently on the shelf with a knee injury, Charlie has been a dominating force on the Bruins blue line. He logs big minutes, currently second on the team only to Mr. Chara. He can rack up points, and has incredible vision, a good accurate shot, and high offensive acumen. On the flipside his defensive game is also sound. He plays physical, not afraid to make a big hit, and rarely takes himself out of the play to do so. He is a great pick up for any fantasy team, he has elite skating ability, will put up points, and hits. Barring injury, Charlie will be a mainstay on the Bruins blue line for many years to come. September 2017 – After a short, but fantastic, run in the Ottawa vs. Boston series last season McAvoy should be on everyone's draft list this fall. McAvoy is a lock for a roster spot and will likely trail only Torey Krug in both total ice-time and total points for a defender. McAvoy's numbers will depend largely on what role he plays on the power-play, and an injury to Krug may thrust him into the quarterback position. Bruins fans are very excited about the arrival of this young man and rightfully so. McAvoy has high upside and should be drafted as such. Look for him in the middle rounds of your re-draft league. April 2017 – It's going to be a trial by fire for Charlie McAvoy. The 19-year-old is going to suit up tonight in game one of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals versus the Ottawa Senators due to some untimely injuries on the big squad. Look for McAvoy to play mostly sheltered minutes, but how he handles himself over the coming days will certainly be a good indication as to what to expect of him for next season. Mike Drover
April 2017 – Charlie McAvoy. Get used to hearing his name because you're about to start hearing it often. McAvoy was called up to the Providence Bruins last night and scored his first point, an assist, to go with a 3-shot plus-1 performance. McAvoy has all the tools and will almost certainly be on the Bruins opening day roster for the beginning of the 2017-2018 season. Mike Drover
December 2016 – Charlie McAvoy is really producing at the NCAA level. McAvoy, who was drafted in the first round in 2016 by the Bruins, has been living up to the hype thus far. McAvoy has scored an impressive 12 points in 14 games for Boston University, and appears well on the way to becoming an elite offensive defenseman. Ideally, you'd like to see McAvoy taking more shots as he has only registered 23 of them thus far. Shots and shot attempts drive offensive production and less than 1.5 a game is not ideal, even for a defender. Mike Drover
June 2016 – Boston’s first pick in the 2016 draft, McAvoy, is one of only two U.S. college hockey players to be rated A in skating by NHL Central Scouting in the 2016 draft. McAvoy’s smooth skating and playmaking abilities led to a successful first season with Boston University, finishing the year for the Terriers with 25 points in 37 games played. While widely considered a talented passer, McAvoy’s shot leaves a little to be desired. McAvoy is not particularly big but he managed to accrue 56 penalty minutes for Boston U in 2015-16 and possesses some nastiness to his game. McAvoy is not NHL-ready but has great potential as an offensive defenseman. Given the proper seasoning, McAvoy should develop into a solid contributor for the Bruins’ blueline in the next three to four years. –Mike Drover
March 2016 – Having just completed his freshman year at Boston University, Charlie McAvoy is a fleet footed offensive defenseman who combines solid physical play and situational awareness. Merging a powerful yet agile skating stride with excellent hockey sense, McAvoy can lead the rush up ice and find seams through defenders when penetrating the zone with ease. McAvoy is superb in transition, able to retrieve the puck quickly, and can change the flow of play in an instant, but he can still be caught out of position trying to generate scoring chances. He has a hard and accurate slap shot from the point, and a nifty wrister, as well being capable of spotting teammates with laser precision passes right on the tape. Solidly built, McAvoy can also lay punishing hits along the boards as well as absorbing punishment for fore checkers. He has all the tools to be an all around defender in the NHL. Aynsley Scott
