Observations:

December 2017 – Following a decent AHL campaign with Stockton in 2016-17, Frattin has moved on to Barys Astana where he's registered 11 goals and 17 assists in 33 KHL contests. On a club featuring former King, Canuck and Flame Linden Vey, Frattin is third on the team with 28 points and leads them with 62 PIM. Don't bank on an NHL future for the soon-to-be 30-year-old. Kevin Wickersham

February 2016 – Frattin was a chip in the recent Dion Phanuef trade. Despite his contract being moved across the province, the Sens have kept him with the AHL Toronto Marlies for the stretch run to the playoffs. He will be an unrestricted free agent at season’s end, the trade does nothing to improve his outlook as it is unexpected he is valued in Ottawa either. Jason Banks

February 2016 – Despite being on the strongest and most offensive AHL franchise, Frattin is having his worst productive year in the minors and is barely a positive player (the worst amongst forwards that have played more than 10 games). He is at this point an average AHL player, playing mostly a 3rd line roll. He still has an above average NHL quality release on pucks, but lack of opportunity is biting him hard. He should see a small boost in production if the NHL team does an expected sell off and recalls a few more notable prospects. The odds of Frattin retuning to the NHL is lowering by the day, and the odds he will ever be fantasy worthy is astronomically slim. Jason Banks

July 2014 – It doesn’t get much shorter than a quartet of games for a franchise, but that’s all Frattin lasted in Columbus as they simply did not have the ice to give for Frattin’s role. He was sent back to Toronto where there are a couple openings for mid-line wingers where he could once again thrive. Dave Nonis discussed the excitement of getting a forward back familiar with their system that they developed that did gain experience from the eventual Stanley Cup Champions for half a year and hopes that he grew more not only as a player but a person. Frattin’s outlook is a higher risk one, but is more advanced than in LA and Columbus. Depending on how he looks in camp, he may be worth a waiver wire look. Jason Banks

March 2014 – Matt Frattin's time with the Los Angeles Kings has came to an end after being traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets as part of the King's Marian Gaborik trade deadline acquisition. In 40 games with the Kings, Frattin registered two goals and six points as a depth winger. Brendan Ross

August 2013 – Frattin showed good growth last season in the limited schedule for the Leafs, compiling just over half a point a game. It’s hard to fathom a much more pressurized role than as an expected scorer in Toronto, but Frattin was packaged and moved as the key return player in the Jonathan Bernier trade this summer. Frattin is now expected to hold his own in a top six role amongst a bunch of players with more high-end talent than in Toronto and for a team expected to challenge for a Stanley Cup once again rather than just scratch to make the playoffs. LA is taking a large gamble in a third year player that could pay off large to his fantasy owners. Less than 40 points will be a disappointment and if he can’t haul the mail, Tanner Pearson, Nick Shore, Linden Vey, Tyler Toffoli, Brandon Kozun and Tomas Hyka would love to jump into an opportunity. Jason Banks

March 2013 – Frattin missed 12 games with minor knee surgery through February and early March. Since his return his ice time has increased as the Leafs look for him to provide an offensive spark, unfortunately in his last seven games he has only contributed two assists. His outlook as a player looks real good as a top-six player, but with the Leafs in a playoff position (a position they are unfamiliar with) they may look too add a forward and Frattin may spend more time in the press box as an extra forward as the Leafs will not test passing him through waivers to get to the AHL. Jason Banks

January 2013 – After struggling in the short training camp, Frattin was reassigned to the Marlies in the AHL. But he received a second lease of life for this season after Joffrey Lupul was placed on injury reserve for a month or more. Toronto’s depth likely means Frattin will be destine to return to the AHL upon Lupul’s return, but with a solid showing, it could force Nonis to make a trade or place another veteran on waivers like they did with Tim Connolly. Jason Banks

December 2012 – Since returning from injury, Frattin has been stellar. He has seven goals and nine points in eight games, with 29 shots. Many nights he has been the driving force of the Marlies’ offense. Jason Banks

July 2012 – Frattin updates are coming weekly in Toronto this off season. He endured himself to fans last season with 15 points with the Leafs and showing upside. He was then assigned to the Marlies to experience more pro games to fast track his development and to help a major playoff effort. He responded by scoring 10 goals and adding three assists in 13 games before being taken out while scoring an empty net goal.  His knee injury was rather serious requiring surgery and it is unknown if he will be read for training camp early on. During the off season he has been resigned to a two year contract. But lately he has been involved in trade rumors as one of the pieces in exchange for Jonathan Bernier. Because of his injury, Frattin will likely start in the AHL to get his feet under him and move back to the NHL quickly. Jason Banks

May 2012 – Frattin benefited from playing four seasons at NCAA powerhouse North Dakota Fighting Sioux. His biggest asset is his ability to get a quick, powerful release off, especially from the slot area. Frattin possesses great sniping traits thus he is able to back defenders off and catch goalies off guard with his shot. He isn’t afraid to work the corners and with his added strength he could fit into the Leafs’ long-term plans as he spent time both up and down in Toronto during his pro, rookie season. Russ Bitely

Fantasy Outlook: D+

Is looking as though injuries have stunted whatever potential he seemed to have. A long shot at this point.
