Observations:
March 2017- Whitney has been traded to the Arizona Coyotes for Brendan Ranford. This was a minor league move as Whitney isn't expected to play with the Coyotes. He mostly likely spends the rest of the season in Tucson helping the Roadrunners push for the Calder Cup Playoff's. Keith Duggan
February 2017 – Despite a half-decent 26 points in 47 games for the Rampage captain, don't expect any NHL sniffs for Whitney. He is there as a stabilizing prescence in a locker room where the young talent will benefit from brief tryouts with the big club. Hayden Soboleski
July 2016 – The Avs have signed Joe Whitney to a one year contract. This will be spent in the AHL, serving as a veteran in a locker room full of new faces. Dont expect any fantasy relevance from the talented AHL scorer, as the wealth of younger fringe players with long-term upside will make it difficult for the organozation to focus on this older, smaller, option. Hayden Soboleski
Nov 2015 – Whitney is the top AHL scorer but is also 27 years old. He leads all Bridgeport players in offense categories, except shots, and continues to dominate AHL scoring. It is unknown why he chose the Islanders over the Devils as there is little to no chance of him making the NHL roster for this team. Expect him to spend most of this season in the AHL. Pat Quinn
September 2014- While Joe Whitney has always put up impressive statistics for Albany, he didn't make a big enough impression for the New Jersey Devils during the preseason. He will start the 2014-15 season in the AHL. Currently 26 years of age, it seems likely he may be headed for a career playing mostly in the minors. Whitney will need multiple injuries to hit the main roster for a chance to be fantasy relevant this season. . Michael Riggi
January 2014 – Despite his tremendous skill, Whitney was never drafted. This is mainly because of his size (5-6 is "generous"), as well as the fact that he was dominating the high school circuit – which is rather weak competition and thus difficult to gauge talent when someone dominate. With Boston College, where he served as captain in his senior year, Whitney excelled on a line with Cam Atkinson (Columbus) and Brian Gibbons (Pittsburgh). The Devils took a chance on him, and he has led Albany in scoring ever since (two-plus years). He has been recalled by the Devils and will start the January 23rd game on a line with Jaromir Jagr. Still only 25, there is some potential here, but as with all diminutive players with skill – the battle will be uphill. Dobber
Whitney has his spot as an AHL mainstay locked down.
