Hometown: Bloomington, MN |
Drafted: 2010 by Washington Capitals, 142nd Overall |
Observations:
August 2016 – Signed to play for the Texas Stars, AHL affiliate of the Dallas Stars, on an AHL contract. Is essentially a free agent but the Dallas Stars would keep a close enough eye on him that they would likely sign him first.
Nov 2015 – Herbert has only played in four of the Bears’ 10 games to start the season registering no points. He was tried at centre but Bears head coach Troy Mann admitted Herbert did not look comfortable. Herbert spent most of last season in the ECHL but has not been sent down yet. He is being used as a depth bottom six player playing one of every three weekend games. Right now he has no fantasy value. Pat Quinn
Sept 2015 – Herbert is looking to impress at Capitals training camp, enough to at least stick in the AHL full-time this season. He was up and down last season between the AHL and the ECHL, seemingly taking the same slow approach the Capitals took with Galiev. Do not expect him to see much of any NHL time this year unless he can impress and jump a few other players on the Bears roster ahead of him. Pat Quinn
May 2015 – Herbert was never able to make it back to the Bears after being assigned for a final time to the ECHL Stingrays. He had 28 points, 19 goals, in the 42 games he played for South Carolina. In the playoffs for the Stingrays he had six assists in 10 games but no goals. Next season he can manage to become a member of the Bears as they will be less crowded, but he needs to show more offense, as he only had two points in the 12 AHL games he played. Of note, he put up 84 penalty minutes in 42 games, and another 18 in the 10 playoff games, for the Stingrays showing a mean side to his game that could be useful in deep fantasy formats. Pat Quinn
November 2014 – Herbert was down to the Capitals ECHL affiliate, the South Carolina Stingrays, on October 30th as he was not getting enough playing time in Hershey. In four ECHL games Herbert had four goals and an assist, and in nine games for the Bears Herbert only has two assists. He is still getting scratched as Bears coach, Troy Mann, wants to have skilled players kept in the top-six and not playing limited minutes; currently the only up-for-grabs positions are filled by Casey Wellman and Chris Brown (when he is in the AHL). He may see more time with the Stingrays if his ice time does not increase, as they want to keep him playing. This is his first year as a pro so a slow start is to be expected. Pat Quinn
Aug 2014 – Herbert recently signed a two year two-way contract with the Capitals and will likely spend the entire season in the AHL. He had his best points-per-game numbers in the NCAA this past season at 0.86 and in his first AHL game recorded both a goal and an assist. In the remaining six games he only recorded one more assist as the Bears failed to make the playoffs. One thing of note is that he had increased his penalty minutes in each of the three seasons he was laying for the University of Minnesota-Duluth. He has the potential to have more scoring ability, but comes with good skating and good tenacity on the forecheck which should lead him to an NHL role eventually. This coming season will paint a better picture of what the Caps think of him and what he can potentially become. Pat Quinn
February 2014 – Herbert is in his third season for Minnesota-Duluth and has totaled 84 points in 106 games, which is solid, but not jaw dropping. The issue is his totals have stayed relatively stagnant: 0.8 points-per-game as a freshman, then .71 p.p.g, then .86 p.p.g this season. He is still without an NHL contract and may very well stick with the College route for his senior year. Nathan Kanter
June 2012 – As a freshman for the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs, the speedy Herbert tallied an impressive 33 points in 41 games for one of the top teams in the country. He is an outstanding skater who also possesses excellent vision and offensive instincts. Not a big player, Herbert needs to fill out but certainly shows some promise as one of the Capitals many good forward prospects. Rich Dillon
Fantasy Outlook: C+
With his speed and vision, Herbert shows some offensive potential. He’s several years away.
