Observations:

July 2016- After a horrific 2014-15 season, Greg Carey came back on a AHL deal and had a strong year in 2015-16. Playing for a weak Springfield Falcons team, he racked up 26 goals and 43 points in 64 games, his 26 goals good for 11th in the AHL. Carey parlayed this into a two-way contract with the Philadelphia Flyers this offseason, where he most likely spend the season with the Flyers AHL team. Keith Duggan

November 2015- After looking like his prospect rankings were completely dead, Greg Carey has gotten off to a hot start in the AHL. The Coyotes invited him to their main training camp and signed Carey to a AHL deal. With five points in six games, Carey is only one point behind his total output from all of last year. Keith Duggan

June 2015- Carey was not tendered a qualifying offer by the Coyotes, making him a free agent on July 1st. It looks as though the Greg Carey experiment has failed. Keith Duggan

June 2015- Greg Carey, the Coyotes big college free agent signing from 2014, has struggled at the next level. He's played mostly bottom six minutes and was a frequent healthy scratch at the AHL level. Carey's played well in the ECHL though, putting up 27 points in 30 games. His contract is up and its questionable if the Coyotes will even tender him a offer. At this moment, Carey carries zero fantasty value anymore. Keith Duggan

November 2014- Carey was recalled back to Portland after tearing up the ECHL in his short stint there. In five games with Gwinnett, Carey scored five goals and three assists for eight points, with a plus -3 rating, including a four goal game. Keith Duggan

November 2014- After five scoreless games with Portland, mixed in with some healthy scratches, Greg Carey has been reassigned to Gwinnett Gladiators of the ECHL. Keith Duggan

October 2014- It was a dissapointing training camp for Greg Carey, as he really didn't make any noise and was a early cut from the Coyotes. He needs to get off to a good start in Portland of the AHL or risk falling behind several other top prospects in the Coyotes system. Keith Duggan

April 2014- Carey has been named to the Hobey Hat Trick, the three finalists for the Hobey Baker Award. His pro career has gotten off to a slow start offensively so far with one assist and a minus -3 in five games for Portland of the AHL. Keith Duggan

March 2014-One of the top undrafted free agents out of NCAA, Carey signed a one year contract with the Phoenix Coyotes. Carey’s contract is for the 2014-2015 season, but will report to Phoenix’s AHL team in Portland and finish the season there under a Professional Tryout. He had an outstanding four-year college career at St. Lawrence University, a point-per-game each season and he leaves as the school’s third all-time leader in points.  A repeat Hobey Baker top ten finalist, Carey led the nation in goals last year and this year he leads in assists (39) and power play points (31). Carey has led the Saints in scoring for four straight years and repeats as scoring champion in the ECAC, his 57 points has him sitting second in the nation. He is also a finalist this year for ECAC Player of the Year and Student-Athlete of the Year. A one-year contract seems like a big risk-reward for Carey but he has been a big scorer at every level he’s played at. The Coyotes could definitely use the offense and you have to think Carey gets a shot to play at the NHL level next season. But, can his game transition to the Dave Tippett/Coyotes defensive system?  If so he could be a top six forward for Phoenix next season, if not it’s a one year contract. It will be interesting to see how he plays out the season with Portland.  Keith Duggan

Fantasy Outlook: D-

After looking like a bust, Carey had a strong 2015-16 AHL season. His future as a top six winger seems over but there is a chance he could work himself up into a bottom six role.
