Observations:

October 2017 – Finn has struggled with injuries throughout his career and it has really hurt his development. After failing to crack the AHL as a regular  Finn was not made a qualifying offer from the Islanders and has signed an ECHL contract with Florida but is starting the year on the IR again. Finn shoulf not be owned in even the deepest of fantasy leagues. Peter Harling

December 2015 – Finn has not played all games for the Sound Tigers playing in 13 of 28 games as he is relegated to the depth defenseman role. Half due to his play and the other half due to the top six defensemen for the Sound Tigers playing again this year. At only 22 he still has room to grow, he just likely will not get a consistent chance until next season. Pat Quinn

September 2015 – Matt Finn’s struggles last season were apparently caused by season long complications related to a preseason concussion, that prevented him from getting into a system and routine, while keeping him looking a little ‘off’ from how he played junior. Finn looked rather decent in the Leafs’ recent Rookie Tournament in London, Ontario, he had flow and vision in his game and is trending forward. The trade to the Islanders brings a fresh outlook to Finn, as he was falling into a depth hole in Toronto that would have been difficult to break out of. The depth on the island is deep in itself, but the major competition for the same roles that Finn plays has a better outlook as Ryan Pulock is pretty much ready to enter the NHL and Matt Pelech does not have the same dynamic potential. Still likely to spend a couple years in the AHL to show his strong game play and growth. Jason Banks

September 2015 – Matt Finn was traded to the New York Islanders, along with four other Maple Leafs prospects, for forward Michael Grabner. Brendan Ross

May 2015 – The season was a long struggle for the high potential defender. Spent most of the year in a numbers game unable to crack the regular lineup or being shuttled twice to the ECHL. Finn had a strong rookie tournament and a good NHL camp and much was hoped for him as the Leafs minor system was lacking offensive blueliners, but he failed to deliver on opportunities. He did not show he was out of place in the AHL as he was only a negative-1 rating in 18 games and registered 28 shots on net, but the game did not come to him as easy as life in the OHL. We can throw these results out the window, as we must stress his potential is not affected by this disappointment. We look for Finn to come back in the fall with a new outlook as he will battle Rinat Valiev and Eric Knodel for offensive opportunities and the ability to quarterback the powerplay. Jason Banks

May 2014 – Despite falling one win short of the 2014 CHL MasterCard Memorial Cup Championship after going 3-0 in round robin play, Matt Finn still captured a spot on the Memorial Cup All-Star Team with his outstanding two-way play finishing with four assists in as many games. Brendan Ross

May 2014 – Defenseman Matt Finn was named to the OHL's 3rd All-Star Team joining Sam Bennett, Max Domi, Nick Baptiste, Darnell Nurse and Oscar Dansk. Brendan Ross

May 2014 – The Ontario Hockey League announced that Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Matt Finn is the 2014-14 recipient of the Mickey Renaud Captain’s Trophy, awarded to the OHL team captain that best exemplifies leadership on and off the ice, with a passion and dedication to the game of hockey and his community that Mickey demonstrated. Finn captained his Guelph Storm team to the 2013-14 OHL Championship scoring 14 goals and 61 points in the regular season en route to a berth in the 2014 CHL Mastercard Memorial Cup, slated to begin May 16th. Brendan Ross

November 2013 – The Toronto Maple Leafs announced the signing of defenseman Matt Finn to a three-year entry level contract on November 19th. Finn currently sits fourth in OHL scoring among defensemen with five goals, 18 assists for 23 points in 24 games played. The second round selection played in game three of the 2013 SUBWAY Super Series and performed very well in the contest showing improved mobility and confidence with the puck. Finn should remain among the leaders in OHL defensive scoring all season long for the Guelph Storm. Brendan Ross

September 2013 – Finn had a strong rookie camp for the Leafs and was very noticeable in his own zone and with puck movement in the games he played. He had the look of a strong second round pick that could make the NHL earlier than expected when he finally turns pro with limited time in the AHL should his development path continue strongly. It is a bit disturbing that the Leafs cast him back to junior very early in camp with all the other Junior players, he may have benefited more from practicing, working with and seeing how the professional veterans prepared and operated for an extra week before being sent back to Guelph of the OHL. He should produce in the region of point per game in the OHL this season, maybe getting a national team invite for Christmas. There is a logjam in Toronto of talented young defensemen, but Finn already has a professional frame and instincts and could be one of the most evenly balanced of their prospect blue liners. He is not yet worth stockpiling, but keep an eye out for his progression to next training camp. Jason Banks

October 2012 – Matt Finn was named to the 2012 Subway Super Series Team OHL Roster slated to compete in a six-game series versus the Russian National Junior Team in November. Brendan Ross

June 2012 – The Toronto Maple Leafs selected defenseman Matt Finn with their second round pick (35th overall) in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.  Finn was the Guelph Storm's leading scorer from the blueline with 48 points in 61 games. Brendan Ross

February 2012  – A fantastic skater with great balance, Finn is currently ranked in the top 10 in goals and assists among OHL defensemen. His fluid stride and ability to find teammates in ideal scoring scenarios make him a promising fantasy prospect. He has been commended for having a tremendous work ethic. John Canario
