Ryan Pilon, D

Shoots: L

Height: 6-2

Weight: 207

Born: 1996-10-10

Hometown: Prince Albert, SK, CAN

Drafted: 2015 by New York Islanders, 147th overall

Observations:

Nov 2015 – Apparently Pilon has quit hockey as he said he has “lost his passion to play hockey” and this is what he felt he needed to do. The departure was a big surprise to the Brandon wheat Kings and the Islanders. If he ever comes back expect an update but in the meantime there is no need to hold on to him. Pat Quinn

June 2015 – Ranked as a late first or second round pick, Pilon somehow fell all the way to the fifth where he was scooped up by the Islanders. Barring character or other concerns currently unknown to the public, the Islanders got a steal by trading up for him. 52 points from a 6'2 defenseman in the WHL? That isn't a fifth round pick. Keep an eye on him, as he is an interesting case study on the value of draft fallers. Austin Wallace

June 2015 –Pilon is a skilled, two-way defender who is strong in all three zones. He skates well and possesses an accurate shot which contributed to his 11-goal, 52 point season with Brandon of the Western Hockey League. A staple on the power play unit, Pilon rarely gets rattled and has improved his decision making in both of his seasons with the Wheat Kings. A huge contributing factor to his success is partner and fellow draft-eligible defeneman Ivan Provorov who was one of the best blueliners in the WHL this past season. The need for improvement in Pilon’s defensive game is what currently has him projected as a second-to-third round selection. Zach Hopkins

Fantasy Outlook: C+

Top-four potential as a puck-moving defenseman who could put up 30-40 points but needs to improve his defensive game.
