Observations:
July 2015 – After tallying 10 goals and 11 assists this year for the Rockford IceHogs in his AHL rookie season, Carey was not given a qualifying offer by the Blackhawks. Unable to make enough of an impression on Chicago's head office in his lone season in the system, the former St. Lawrence University Saint became a UFA. On July 13th, he signed a one-year deal with the Iowa Wild. This is a good chance for Carey to rehabilitate his value in the AHL, as Iowa was by far the worst team in the league in 2014-15. He should get an opportunity to play in a scoring role for the Wild and perhaps play himself into a two-way NHL deal in 2016. Matt Donohue
June 2014 – Carey, along with his brother Greg (Phoenix), were two of the most highly sought after free agents leaving the college ranks. Matt decided to put pen to paper with the Blackhawks and was put into a pair of NHL games towards the end of the season. He scored his first NHL goal and saw time mainly on a line with Brandon Saad. Carey is more of a goal scorer than a playmaker. Given his relatively young age and Chicago's depth up front, it is likely that Carey will apprentice for two years in the AHL, with occasional cups of coffee with the big club. Right now he looks to be in tough when it comes to a future on the scoring line, but a lot can happen in two years. – Dobber
There is some upside here, but a scoring-line spot won't be handed to him. He's in tough against other prospects.
