June 2015 – Arriving on North American soil in 2010 from his native Finland, Tirronen joined the North American Hockey League’s Topeka Roadrunners and played well enough to secure a scholarship with Merrimack College. Emerging as a the starter in his junior season with the Warriors, Tirronen played well on Hockey East’s last place team putting up a 2.55 GAA and a .908 SV% with one shutout. Breaking out in his senior season, the Finnish netminder complied a 12-14-3 record with a 2.30 GAA and a .914 SV%. Although his team again finished towards the bottom of Hockey East, they did make some noise in the postseason, winning their first-round series vs. Northeastern. Tirronen’s spotlight moment was a 63 save performance in a double overtime win.
In March, Tirronen signed a one-year entry-level deal with the Carolina Hurricanes and was able to appear in one late-season game for the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers. He earned his first professional win, a 4-3 decision over Rockford where he made 32 saves.
As a very raw prospect, Rasmus relies on his size and athleticism in net. He will benefit greatly from a professional coaching staff and could improve immensely if he can develop more technique to pair with his raw tools and compete level. Likely, he will start the season in the AHL with Charlotte. Kevin LeBlanc
Fantasy Outlook: D+
Raw project goaltender, but does have the NHL size and athleticism.
