Observations:
December 2014 – After three games and zero points, Rangers sent Miller to the minors again in the middle of October for more experience at center. In the AHL he scored six goals and 15 points in 19 games. In late November, Miller got the call again from the parent club. Since joining the Rangers Miller has five goals and two assists in 13 games. He is playing his best hockey since being called up. He is playing mostly bottom line minutes but he definitely owns second line upside, which he can earn with his hard work. Miller is in a tricky situation, because the Rangers want him to play center in the long run, but they have no openings at that position right now. The Rangers are in need of a winger with size, speed and grit, all of which Miller possesses. So they need to convert him full time to the wing or there is a possibility for another trip to the minors until there is a spot for him in the middle.Jozsef Kurtosi
October 2014 – As expected earlier, Miller has made the Rangers opening night roster after he spent the last season between the AHL and NHL. The Ohio native matured a lot since last season. He trained a lot more this offseason than last year to be in shape for this upcoming season. Last year he scored 15 goals and totaled 42 points in just 41 games with the Wolf Pack. This year he determined to play bottom six minutes on the Rangers, most likely as a third line center. He still needs to work on his defensive zone coverage and he also weak on faceoffs, which are keys for him, if he wants to play full time job in NHL as a centerman. Jozsef Kurtosi
March 2014 – JT Miller has been up and down several times this season. In the NHL he is playing as a 4th line forward for the Rangers, but has been absolutely carrying his team with his pivotal two-way play in the AHL. He has size, but also an amazing skater. What he needs to improve is his decision making, which is holding him back from a full time spot in the NHL. Once he arrives, Miller will be a versatile NHL player who can play second or third line minutes. He has some Brandon Dubinsky in his play and Miller will finish out the season with the Rangers and will not return to the AHL in near future. Jozsef Kurtosi
October 2013 – The 2012-13 campaign was a tale of two seasons for Miller. He was rock solid through 42 games in the AHL and posted 23 points to go along with 29 PIMs. The Rangers arguably rushed him to the NHL though, and he didn't look nearly as comfortable there. With an up-and-down year under his belt, Miller managed to crack New York's opening night roster as a sophomore and could benefit from Alain Vigneault's up-tempo, puck-possession system. The preseason doesn't count for much, but the 20 year-old winger was one of the best players for the Rangers during training camp and will be a bottom-six forward for the Blueshirts to start the year. He's still using his big frame to his advantage at every turn, and a shaky 2013 doesn't seem to have affected his confidence. Franklin Steele
March 2013 – The Rangers seem to be pushing the issue with Miller, thrusting him into a top nine role in the NHL almost right away. His offensive production has been very poor to this point, but he is not hurting the team on the ice and is showing confidence in shooting the puck regularly. Might have been better served with more AHL seasoning and may get thrown back there at the deadline if the Rangers decide to spend on another forward option to get them into the playoffs. Miller himself has good upside and could turn into a reliable option within a couple seasons, but not fully sold on him being a full-time NHLer yet. Jason Banks
December 2012 – Miller was named to the final roster for the WJC and will be an important player on and off the ice for Team USA. Rich Dillon
December 2012 – JT Miller was one of the 27 American players named to the USA preliminary roster for the upcoming 2013 World Junior Championships. Miller will be counted on for his experience and leadership for Team USA and is essentially a lock to make the team. Through eight games, Miller has tallied one assist for the AHL's Conneticut Whale. Brendan Ross
February, 2012 – JT Miller is a player that derives his offensive game through his overall physical strength, skating ability and intense work ethic. The former University of North Dakota commit had a change in plans and joined the OHL’s Plymouth Whalers for the 2011-12 season. Miller is a player who has a powerful stride that he uses to close gaps and attack in close quarters. A strong quick stick and keen defensive awareness makes JT Miller a valuable player offensively and defensively. He does not possess much offensive creativity but his hockey intelligence is sufficient enough to become a potential top two pivot. The physical pivot does have an above-average shot with good accuracy.
Miller is never going to be an offensive dynamo. But he'll hold his own and he could eventually provide good value in leagues that count PIM.
