Observations:
June 2014 – Hutton entered this season as Nashville’s backup goaltender but an infection to starter Pekka Rinne thrust him into a starting role for much of the season. A career AHLer without a single NHL win, Hutton performed admirably collecting 20 wins and posting a respectable 2.62GAA and .910SV%. Following the season Hutton was rewarded with a two year one-way contract. While he will more than likely be the Preds backup goaltender for the next couple of years, Hutton is still a placeholder for one of Mazanec, Hellberg, or Saros going forward. If the Preds improve defensively from their past season Hutton could put up decent fantasy number in spot starts but he is not a long term option. Donesh Mazloum
August 2013 – Nashville continues to pull under the radar goalies from the underground and provide opportunities for them. This season it will be Carter Hutton, a career AHLer who is mature and capable of starting a limited number of games. He is a good shot blocking goalie and has good ‘scramble’ to his game. In the AHL, under the thumb of a trio of parent clubs, Hutton has proved an ability to handle a work load and be a winning goalie while energizing an organization. For the Preds, they feel that Magnus Hellberg is close, a year or two away, and they feel Pekka Rinne can still handle a solid 65+ game workload, Hutton becomes a cheap, bridge/depth goalie for a single season. For Hutton the opportunity is massive to his future, he will be behind one of the NHL’s best defense squads, and will get to start a limited number of games to prove he can play at the highest level. Should he post solid results, he could find himself in the good life of an NHL backup for a few years.
Fantasy Outlook: D+
His ceiling is rather low due to lack of pure talent, but could post solid stats in spot starts.
Footage:
Hutton discusses openly his game and how he has made good on his opportunities, something that will repeat itself this season.
