Observations:

June 2014 – Mike Winther was not signed by the Dallas Stars indicating that he will be eligible for the 2014 NHL Draft. Brendan Ross

May 2014 – After struggling to stay healthy, reports are surfacing that the Dallas Stars are not expected to sign Mike Winther which would make him a re-entry prospect for the 2014 NHL Draft. Between Prince Albert and Calgary of the WHL, Winther posted seven goals and 26 points in 31 games. Brendan Ross

January 2014 – Winther (14 points,18 games) was acquired by the Calgary Hitmen (WHL) via trade from the Prince Albert Raiders on Dec. 28. In exchange, the Raiders acquired forward Calder Brooks (22 points, 35 games) and a second round selection in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft. Winther joins one the top teams in the WHL (9-1-0 in last 10 games), along with premier talent such as forwards Greg Chase, Brady Brassart, and Jake Virtanen. The Alberta native is nearing a return from an upper-body injury that kept him sidelined for nearly the entire month of December. Clayton Bailey

December 2013 – Winther is expected to miss 2-4 weeks for Prince Albert of the WHL with an upper body injury. The 54th overall selection in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft currently ranks fifth on the Raiders with 50 points (22 goals, 28 assists) in 68 games played this season. Clayton Bailey

April 2013 – His third season with the Prince Albert Raiders saw Winther take a small step backwards statistically. In 2012-13 Winther’s goal scoring dropped from 32 last season, to 22 , while his overall points slipped from 56 to 50. On a positive note, he posted by far his best plus/minus, finishing at plus-15 besting his minus-9 from the last season. Rex Doty

April 2012 – Winther went from being a disappointing rookie to a lethal scorer this year. He improved from 10 points as a 16 year-old to 56 as 17 year-old. It’s that type of growth that makes Winther a very lucrative prospect. That also includes a team high 32 goals for the lowly Prince Albert Raiders. His season also included an appearance at the CHL Top Prospects Game as well as an invite to play for Canada at the Under-18 World Championship. Winther is another undersized draft eligible player that will have to battle consistency issues to take the next step.

Fantasy Outlook: C+

A bit on the small side. Talented goal scorer will have to round out his game. Long wait time.
