Derek Joslin, D

Shoots: L

Height: 6-1

Weight: 210

Born: 1987-3-17

Hometown: Richmond Hill, Ont.

Drafted: 2005 5th round 149th overall – San Jose Sharks

Observations:

July 2012 – Carolina bought out Joslin, likely to open up room for their higher potential defensive prospects. He was then quickly picked up by Vancouver where he will have to fight to be the extra defenseman on the roster. It’s very likely Joslin is placed on waivers and assigned to the AHL to start the season and add a vet presence on the ice as Nolan Baumgartner has retired in the past week. Jason Banks

February 2012 – Joslin was taken in the fifth round back in 2005 by the Sharks, but has since been with Carolina from 2011 trade. Played juniors in OHL with the Ottawa 67s and has been developing his game over last three years in AHL between Worcester and Charlotte. Sound all-around game with heavy shot and great one-timing ability. Weakness comes in his skating though currently earning time in Raleigh.

Fantasy Outlook: B-

Joslin can play in all zones of the ice with good shot and looking to go long-term in NHL.

Fantasy Prospects Report Notes (Any FPR’s released in the last 18 months will not be listed here):

2007 Fantasy Prospects Report:

When you think San Jose powerplay, you tend to envision Thornton, to Cheechoo and Thornton to Cheechoo and…well, you get it. While Matt Carle is the team’s clear-cut power play QB, the Sharks need depth in that area. Enter Derek Joslin. The leading scorer on the Ottawa 67s blue line three years running, Joslin entered the San Jose organization at the conclusion of that first season at the top of the list way back in 2005. Now 20 and ready for the pros, there’s little the 6’1, 191 lbs rearguard needs to polish to be a formidable second-unit threat. He’ll likely spend all of next year and likely two in the AHL, followed by half a year up and half a year down.

Potential: PP QB, (15-30-45)
