Observations:
February 2014 – Fontaine has been playing more of a checking role for the Wild as of late, spending time on the fourth line with Erik Haula and Mike Rupp. However, the 25-year-old has tallied 12 goals so far on the year and with more than 30 games left this season, he should easily reach the 15-goal mark. October 2013 – Justin Fontaine has made the most of his time in the NHL with the Minnesota Wild, playing in 11 games so far this season and recording two goals, while being a plus five. Fontaine seems to be gaining the support of his head coach, Mike Yeo, as he has found himself on the top line alongside Mikko Koivu and Zach Parise from time to time. The 25-year-old is a smaller forward with decent speed, and if he continues to get opportunities to play on the top line then the points should follow. Jamie Zadow
June 2013 – Coming off two solid seasons in the AHL, he enters the offseason a restricted free agent and likely seeking a consistent opportunity in the NHL. While it will be tough enough already to crack the Wild’s roster in 2014, it remains to be seen if he’s offered a one or two-way deal in Minnesota. At 25, his prospect label is diminishing by the day. However, his upside in the right situation remains something to be very excited about. In the five game playoff series loss to the Grand Rapids Griffins, Fontaine led the Aeros in scoring with eight points (three goals, five assists). Appearing in 64 games, he went on to record 56 points, (23 G, 33 A) finishing in the top-20 in AHL scoring ranks. Since finishing his first season of professional hockey ranking sixth among AHL rookies with 55 points (16 G, 39 A) in 73 games played, Fontaine proved to show no signs of slowing down entering the 2012-2013 season with the Houston Aeros. February 2012 – Fontaine is a small forward with good vision, signed by the Wild following a stellar career at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Currently playing for Houston in the AHL, Fontaine has posted 33 points in his first 50 professional games. Rich Dillon
At 24-years-old, Fontaine’s prospect clock is ticking, but there is a chance he could still carve a niche as a power-play specialist for the Wild.
